“This gown started with the idea of restraint. A very clean, snatched column silhouette that lets the lines do most of the talking. I’ve always loved how the mid-century masters like Cristóbal Balenciaga could create drama through shape rather than embellishment, and that philosophy really guided this piece. The center front remains completely uninterrupted from neckline to hem, creating this elongated architectural line that visually stretches the body. Then the story flips when you turn around. The ruffles emerge at the center back and curve thoughtfully forward, almost like a sculptural flourish, exaggerating the column silhouette while still keeping the front sharp and minimal.
The ruffle work itself carries forward techniques we explored in the McCall gown—irregular layers that feel slightly spontaneous, almost as though each one has its own personality. Some edges are raw cut, others finished with horsehair for structure, creating a soft contrast between control and movement. I’ve always been fascinated by designers like John Galliano who juxtapose matte structure with something airy and almost ghostlike. That tension between the grounded and the ethereal gives the gown its quiet drama. Not to be dramatic… but she absolutely is.”
